Gion no kyôdai

The film "Sisters of the Gion" (1936) is a drama about two geisha sisters, Isuzu Yamada as Omocha and Yōko Umemura as Umekichi, living in Kyoto's Gion district. The story centers around their different outlooks on relationships with men, with Umekichi taking care of her patron Shimbei Furusawa after he loses his business, and Omocha seeking to find her own patron while using her charm to manipulate customers. Ultimately, both sisters are defeated, with Umekichi being abandoned by her patron and Omocha being hospitalized and cursing the geisha system.
