Richard Houston Gaines was born on July 23, 1904, in Indian Territory and grew up in Texas. He studied drama at Texas Christian University before working various jobs in the US and France, securing a scholarship to study at the American Laboratory Theatre. Gaines had notable roles on Broadway, including Abraham Lincoln, and appeared in over 75 film and television productions between 1940 and 1962, often playing authoritative figures.
