Joseph Calleia was a Maltese-born American actor and singer who rose to stardom on Broadway before transitioning to film. He excelled in villainous roles, showcasing his darkly mysterious characters with a hint of humor, as seen in classics like Algiers (1938) and Gilda (1946). During World War II, Calleia led the Malta War Relief organization in the US and toured for the USO and Hollywood Victory Committee. He worked steadily in film and television after the war.
