Biography

Machiko Kyō was a Japanese actress whose film work primarily took place in the 1950s. She rose to acclaim for her roles in Akira Kurosawa's Rashōmon and Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu, two of Japan's greatest films of the 20th century. Known for her critically acclaimed collaborations with prominent directors, Kyō received numerous awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Japanese Academy and honors from the Japanese government.
