A Story from Chikamatsu

In feudal Kyoto, Mohei (Kazuo Hasegawa), a devoted apprentice to Ishun (Eitarō Shindō), a wealthy and ruthless grand scroll-maker, is forced to confront his own morality when Otama (Yōko Minamida), the family's maid, lies about her engagement to him in order to protect Mohei from her employer's advances. As Mohei secretly falls for Ishun's wife Osan (Kyōko Kagawa), they concoct a plan to escape together after she discovers her husband's infidelity and they are forced to flee their lives behind.
