Richard Arnold Roundtree was an American actor born on July 9, 1942, in New Rochelle, New York, to John and Kathryn Watkins. He gained recognition for his portrayal of private detective John Shaft in the 1971 film Shaft and its sequels, cementing him as "the first black action hero." His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination and had a lasting impact on cinematic depictions of black masculinity.
