She graduated from New York's High School of Performing Arts and began her career with films like El Super (1979) and La Bamba (1987), for which she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female in 1996. Peña also starred in notable TV shows like Resurrection Blvd. and The Brothers Garcia, and appeared in films such as Rush Hour and Nothing Like the Holidays.
